Hobby Updates - July 2013
Here are some quick updates on the hobbying front.
Warhammer 40K
* Oberon's Gold Standard Tournament
|
castled in my own corner against Joel's Chaos Space Marine army |
Last March 23, Oberon sponsored RHGC's first "gold" standard tournament held in Neutral Grounds - Centris. A gold standard tournament required fully painted and based armies to showcase not just the gaming aspect of Warhammer but also the importance of the hobbying part of it.
It was where I first used the 6th Edition codex of the Dark Angels on a tournament and here is my list.

Dark Angels (1500pts)
-- Librarian (powerfield generator)
-- Command Squad (Banner of Devastation)
-- 5-man Tactical Squad (lascannon)
-- 5-man Tactical Squad (plasmacannon)
-- 2x5-man Tactical Squad (Rhino, meltagun)
-- 5-man Deathwing Terminators (thunder hammer & storm shield)
-- Land Raider Crusader
-- 10-man Devastator Squad (4 missile launchers with flakk missiles)
-- Imperial Bastion (quadgun)

* The Triumvirate Wars
|
my Space Marine contingent working side by side with the heretics of Chaos... heresy! |
This was held last May 19 and it's a three-header tournament. My teammates are Gelo (Orkz) and Joel (Chaos Space Marines). Each member will have a 1000 point army and only a combination of two members will play each match using the Battle Brothers alliance rule.
|
this time, fighting with the Orkz... heresy yet again! |
We called our team "Team Green" since all our armies' paint schemes have green on it. I used the Space Marines codex for my Dark Angels force and I was assigned to bring a lot of scoring units so the others can focus on getting the heavy hitters on their armies.

Team Green |
I forgot exactly how my list looks like but it has the following:
-- Librarian
-- 3x10 Tactical Squads (Razorback, meltagun, lascannon)
-- Thunderfire Cannon and Techmarine
-- 2 Attack Bikes (multi melta)
* New Army - Imperial Guards: Catachan Jungle Fighters
As a tribute to my dad who passed away last year on active military service, I am starting an Imperial Guard army using Catachan models. I will call my regiment the 20th Villamor Air Commandos and I'm currently painting them a bit similar to the local air force's woodland camo pattern.
|
work in progress: finished camo pattern |
My dad was a combat pilot of the 20th Air Commando Squadron in Villamor Air Base so that's where I based the regiment's name. For the background story, the regiment is raised from a mountainous Imperial garrison planet called Villamor. These guards specialize in stealth missions, usually ambush and reconnaissance, and are usually deployed via airlift. They work closely with the Imperial Navy and can summon aerial support when necessary.

finished models (just lacking the base) |
I am preparing this army to debut on this year's Grand Tournament. I have plans to expand this collection so I bought the Forge World Imperial Armor Aeronautica book for aircraft options outside GW. At the moment, I have two Vendetta Gunships to complement this army.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles
* Oberon Gold Standard Tournament for WFB
Oberon, via RHGC, also sponsored a gold standard tournament for Warhammer Fantasy. I wasn't able to join (as I have no WFB army anymore) but I was able to pass by to ogle at all the fantastically painted armies. Makes me want to start my own Ogre Kingdom.

X-Wing (Fantasy Flight)
I got hooked on another miniature game and why not, it's Star Wars! "X-Wing" is a squadron-based tabletop game by Fantasy Flight Games, featuring some of the movie's iconic fighters like the X-wing (doh) and the TIE fighter. The miniatures are pre-painted and the overall quality of the production is good.
The rules are engaging and easy to understand. At the moment, there are only two factions to select from: the Rebels and the Empire. Squadron building is similar with Warhammer (each fighters have corresponding points based on their pilots and upgrades). FFG is continuously releasing new fighters in "waves" with 4 new miniatures per wave so far.
My collection at the moment is composed of the following (the Rebels are in
RED):
- 4 X-wings
- 1 Y-wing
- 2 A-wings
- 2 B-wings (pre-order)
- 1 YT-1300
- 5 TIE fighters
- 2 TIE interceptor
- 1 Firespray-31

Other fighters that are released but I don't own yet:
- HWK-290
- TIE Advanced
- TIE Bomber
- Lambda-class Shuttle
Dystopian War
I'm selling my Empire of the Blazing Sun fleet to fund my X-wing squadrons. I intend to get all available X-wing models so that I can lend a squadron to anyone who wants to play the game. Sadly, I have to sell something to do that and I have no spare models to sell from my Warhammer collection anymore.
My fleet consists of the following:
* 3 Sokatsu-class Battleships (1 painted, 2 primed black)
* 3 Nakatsu-class Cruisers (primed black)
* 9 Uwatsu-class Frigates (basecoated)
* 15 Flyers (primed black)
* 2 DFA-170 Class Bombers (new)
* 1 Tenkei-class Sky Fortress (primed black)
