Warhammer 40,000
Warhammer 40,000 or simply Warhammer 40K is a miniature-based tabletop game. It involves building and painting your own miniature army and pit them against others' on a dioramic 6x4 or 4x4 feet table using a standardized set of game rules. Miniature armies come in various factions, from Imperial commandos to space-faring orks, each with its own background stories (what 40K players call "fluff") and combat units.

My army, a sub-faction of the Adeptus Astartes or the Space Marines, is of the so-called Dark Angels Chapter - one of thousands of regiments of bio-enhanced supersoldiers created by the Emperor of Man to impose his will throughout the grim universe of the 41st millennium.

Dark Angels of the Adeptus Astartes
The Dark Angels Chapter is first among legions of Space Marines bred by the Emperor from his own genetic imprints. Enhanced physiologically for combat operations, they are literally Angels of Death in the battlefield, sowing fear to anyone who dared oppose their mandate. Their homeworld, Caliban - now reduced to a barren asteroid after an epic battle against their traitorous Brothers - holds the Chapter's mobile fortress-monastery called the Tower of Angels. Here, deep within the labyrinthine pathways to the underground caverns, lies the key to their monastic nature. The Dark Angels hides a millenia-long secret that compromised their honor. It is with this reason that they and their Successor Chapters are called the Unforgiven.

G.I.G. - Session 1

From what could be the last few 5th edition games we'll have before we start playing 6th edition 40K.

What: 1,500 points 40K double-header
Where: Garrick's Place
Why: ...because we can
Who: Obi (Dark Angels) and Jun (Tau) versus Garr (Mech Orkz) and Pork (More Orkz)
When: June 17, 2012 (first G.I.G. session)

the battlefield

Obi's Army List (Dark Angels)
* Chaplain goes with 5 Hammernators in a Land Raider Crusader
* two tactical squads with power weapons, lascannons, and meltaguns in Razorbacks
* Land Raider Godhammer
* a squadron of Land Speeder Tornado

a heavy weapons combat squad taking potshots at ork wagons

Jun's Army List (Tau)
* Commander with bodyguards in crisis suits
* two Fire Warrior squads in Devilfish
* two Stealthsuit squads
* two Hammerheads
* a Broadside squad

the Tau gunline

Garr's Army List (Orkz)
* Battle Wagons... lots
* Trukk Boyz... lots
* Big Mek with kustom force field
* War Bozz on bike
* Deffkoptaz

Garrik's orkz charged mindlessly on a Land Raider

Pork's Army List (More Orkz)
* Beerkada (War Bozz and Mega Nobz) in Battle Wagon
* Grot tanks!
* a mob of Killa Kanz
* a mob of Bikerz

leering grot tanks from the Dark Angels' perspective

Mission:
Annihilation

Deployment:
Pork's orkz deployed first, putting everything he got on the table. His bikerz screened the advance of his Wagon while the Kanz and gretchin tanks forms a wall to his left flank, separating his tribe to Garrik's?? Garrik puts more orkz on the table with lotsa trukks and wagons.

Jun (Tau) and Obi (Dark Angels) after deployment

Jun took a refused left flank, deploying at the leftmost edge of the field while I took his immediate right flank to secure him from a potentially lethal assault coming from Garrik's side of the field. My objective: to halt Garrik's advance while the Tau firepower whittle down Pork's elite orkz.

The Tau unerringly did their job as nothing's left of Pork's biker boyz by turn 2, meaning we can take potshots on the Wagon without the benefit of a cover save. Things are not turning out good on my side of the field as even when I manage to throw lots of ammo towards Garrik's orkz they are either saved by the kuztom force field umbrella or it's just not enough with the amount of trukk boyz looming on the horizon.

Start of Turn 2: Pork is now crossing our deployment lines

The Beerkada disembarked in front of the Tau gunline and created havoc immediately. Jun spent several turns of shooting rounds to finish them off with the War Bozz cinematically dying last. I blocked off further ork advance to Jun's gunlines (we desperately need those guns) with my Razorbacks and Land Raiders. However, with lotsa trukks going our way, I decided to buy time and disembarked my Chaplain and his Terminator posse to assault the War Bozz and a mob of boyz and bait the orkz into the fray. An expensive bait but that's what I have left.

bike-fodders right in front of the Tau gunline

Jun still able to whittle down the ork numbers before a wave of two trukk mobz charged at the now exposed Terminators. They held the orkz at bay for a turn, giving more room for Jun to gun down the greenskins.

At the end, it's a Kill Point win for the unholy alliance of Dark Angels and Tau but looks like a draw in Victory Points.
